DSL Pirates Pitcher Andy Maldonado Suspended 72 Games

Published:

Minor League Baseball announced the suspension of DSL Pirates right-handed pitcher Andy Maldonado for 72-games due to violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Maldonado failed for Stanozolol, which means he will miss the entire 2020 season.

Maldonado signed for $170,000 back on July 21, 2018, which was his 16th birthday. He received the third highest bonus for a Pirates pitcher in the 2018-19 international signing class. He has a 6’5″ frame that has plenty of projection. He threw 87-90 MPH when he signed and showed some instant additional velocity, but he had major control issues in 2019 and showed no improvements as the season went along. In 12 starts, he had an 8.62 ERA, with 37 walks in 31.1 innings.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
