This isn’t a surprise. Bob Nutting could have done this when Huntington was fired, but held off on any further moves until the next GM got in place. In short, Stark was going to be fired, and was just left waiting for a GM to fire him, as no GM is going to retain the previous assistant GM.
It’s also a move that is warranted. Stark largely was responsible for overseeing the Pirates’ development system from the day he entered the system. That development system has a horrible track record.
We’re already starting to hear some things about the culture around the organization in the minors. I know it’s only going to get worse as more information comes out about the system. And I know that Stark oversaw and was responsible for a lot of that. Between a bad track record at developing, and bad culture, the removal of Stark from the system was overdue.
UPDATE: Larry Broadway reportedly has been let go as well.
Source: In addition to Kyle Stark, the Pirates fired Larry Broadway today. Broadway's the minor-league director who, beyond presiding over some of the worst player development in Major League Baseball, tried — and failed — to fire Omar Moreno this week. #DKPS #Pirates
