Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates (65-89) are playing a three-game series on the road against the Milwaukee Brewers (84-70). In game two tonight, James Marvel will make his third career start. He pitched well in his debut against the St Louis Cardinals on September 8th, allowing two runs over five innings. That was followed six days later by seven runs over four innings against the Chicago Cubs.

The Brewers will counter with 26-year-old right-hander Zach Davies, who has a 3.70 ERA in 150.2 innings, with 98 strikeouts and a 1.33 WHIP. He faced the Pirates twice in early June, giving up two runs over eight innings in the first game, followed by three runs over five innings six days later. He then faced them twice in a row on June 30th/July 5th and combined to allow one run over ten innings.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
