Live Discussion: Pirates vs Phillies, 7:05 PM

Published:

The Pittsburgh Pirates (45-51) take on the Philadelphia Phillies (51-47) for three games this weekend at PNC Park. The Pirates will send out Joe Musgrove for game two in place of Trevor Williams, who is out due to the flu. Musgrove’s last start was five days ago when he allowed four runs over 4.2 innings against the St Louis Cardinals. He gave up three runs over six innings in his prior outing. He has a 4.62 ERA at home, compared to 4.02 on the road. The Phillies will counter with right-hander Zach Eflin, who has a 4.16 ERA in 106 innings, with 88 strikeouts and a 1.32 WHIP. In his last two starts combined, facing the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves, he served up 13 runs over nine innings. Eflin has a 4.44 ERA in ten road starts this season.

Tomorrow’s starter will be announced after today’s game. Dario Agrazal is an option to go on regular rest, while Mitch Keller will also be on regular rest tomorrow. It sounds like Trevor Williams will at least need a few more days before he can go, but nothing has been decided yet.

Here are the lineups:

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
