MLB Pipeline’s Top 30 Pirates Prospects

Published:

On Thursday afternoon, MLB Pipeline released their list of the top 30 prospects for the Pittsburgh Pirates. We already knew the top five were Mitch Keller, Ke’Bryan Hayes, Travis Swaggerty, Oneil Cruz and Cole Tucker, in that order. That’s because Pipeline had the first four in their top 100 and Tucker was listed as one of five players who just missed the list.

The rest of the top ten (in order) includes Kevin Kramer, Calvin Mitchell, Kevin Newman, Bryan Reynolds and Luis Escobar.

Their top 30 doesn’t include any real surprises, either with omissions or surprise players in the top 30. One player they included is Juan Pie  (ranked 28th), who spent the 2018 season in the DSL. He was the top signing during the 2017-18 international signing period for the Pirates at $500,000 until they signed Ji-Hwan Bae late for $1.25M (Bae is ranked 16th for Pipeline). We don’t rank players in our top 50 until they debut in the U.S., which Pie should do this summer, likely in the GCL.

We posted our own top 50 in our 2019 Prospect Guide, which will be fully updated soon to include every prospect in the system. Below you will find five other top ten lists from major sources, followed by an average ranking between all of them.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
