The 2018 minor league season begins tonight, and we will have coverage of all of the teams and prospects in the Pirates’ system throughout the year.
The Pirates are in a rebuilding year in the minors, ranking in the middle of the pack for farm system rankings in the game. Fortunately, they have a lot of young prospects ready to step up in the lower levels, highlighted by a team in West Virginia that is loaded with potential breakout guys.
They will need some big seasons from those potential breakout players in order to rebuild the system. They might still end up middle of the pack next year, although that would be a great thing under the right circumstances. Guys like Austin Meadows, Mitch Keller, Kevin Newman, Jordan Luplow, Colin Moran, Max Moroff, and others at the top have a shot at graduating from prospect status. If that happens, and if the Pirates remain middle of the pack next year, then it means they had a lot of younger guys stepping up to replace the losses at the top of the system.
That’s a good thing, as the players who graduate from prospect status are still in the system. It’s the same with players who graduated in previous years — Jameson Taillon, Josh Bell, Trevor Williams to name a few. The Pirates continue to get younger at the MLB level, but they’re going to need prospects to continue stepping up in the lower levels, either to provide future replacement options, or to provide some trade depth when they’re contending again.
