Pirates Could Move Andrew McCutchen After Discussing a Possible Deal this Summer

Published:

Ken Rosenthal and Buster Olney had two different rumors today about the Pittsburgh Pirates moving Andrew McCutchen. The first one to come out from Rosenthal was that the Pirates and Washington Nationals discussed a huge deal at the non-waiver trade deadline involving McCutchen, which was separate from the Mark Melancon deal. According to his sources, the Pirates wanted top outfielder prospect Victor Robles from the National, along with “a number of other players”. The link has the full details.

The second move from Olney is a different move, one involving a game of musical chairs in the outfield. Olney tweeted that the Pirates are considering moving McCutchen to right field, Gregory Polanco to left field and Starling Marte to center field. That is an idea that Tim Williams recently covered here, and with Starling Marte earning his second Gold Glove, it would make sense to move him to center field now as McCutchen continues to decline defensively. More on both of these discussions later tonight.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
