Radhames Liz’s Winter League Team Announces His Deal With the Pirates

The winter league team of pitcher Radhames Liz has announced his agreement to a two-year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Estrellas de Oriente posted this article(link is in Spanish) saying that Liz has agreed to the 2/3M deal and is now in Pittsburgh taking his physical and signing the contract. They also point out that he has regularly hit 97-98 MPH this winter, which is the same velocity he was throwing back when he was a top prospect in the Baltimore Orioles system. The 31-year-old has a 1.90 ERA in five winter ball starts, with a .195 BAA and a 5:29 BB/SO ratio in 23.2 innings.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.

John : If his arm is that live, what’s not to like here? Can we expect Liz to break camp to Pittsburgh ? If so ,can he compete for a relevant back end position? He got a respectable major league contract , How many other clubs are believed to have been in on him?

I know I’m not the main John, but a few things: it was reported that it was actually a minor league deal, not sure if that’s official or not. Also, hes been starting in the Dominican so he could end up getting a shot there. Finally the other day it was mentioned that up to 11 teams were interested, plus some from other countries.
