Starling Marte Placed on Disabled List, Brent Morel Recalled

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed outfielder Starling Marte on the 7-day disabled list with a concussion. They have recalled third baseman Brent Morel to take his roster place. Marte was hit in the head by a pitch on Friday. He sat out Saturday, pinch-hit on Sunday, then played Monday, before sitting out last night’s game. Morel was up with the Pirates earlier in the year, but just for one game. He struck out in his only at-bat.

John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball.

When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.

The Mushroom got a hit!

Jason Kaatz

One aspect of this is getting more reps for Snider before the deadline. Although maybe that ship has sailed for getting value out of a trade for Snider and he is on the bench for the long haul.

leowalter

Yeah, that 4 for seven stretch of Snider’ s and league leading 11 pinch hits makes him almost worthless.

CalipariFan506

I think Snider’s value off the bench for the Pirates is greater than the value he could net in a trade.

Any idea why no Lambo or Hague?

Also Hague has sat out the last two games.
Any idea why?

I’d like to see how far Lambo could hit
one at Colorado.

Jason Creasy has walked 6 guys his last 84+ IP. This is just unbelievable. 62-6 k:bb during that span. 1 walk in last 38ip. 23:1 k:bb. Even Greg Maddux would be impressed with these numbers. Can’t wait to see what he does in AA.

I guess the Tabata project is finally over, thank God. Kinda curious about why they waited, I was starting to wonder if NH traded him.

moose7195

I mean that it is curious that they waited with Marte, not Tabata

we called up morel i’m guessing due to pedro’s limp last night. This schmuck doesn’t belong in the MLs. Can’t we use Martinez as a backup? Morel serves no purpose

leowalter

YOU are the schmuck in this story. You probably couldn’t carry Morel’s bat. What were you ? A Little League All Star ? Clown stuff.

csnumber23

Starling just can’t catch a break this year! I hope he recovers well! We need him down the stretch!

cabbo80

Don’t bump your head or you will sit for 7 days is the Morel to this story.

When I read this I was sure it was James Santelli. He was dynamite with the puns.
