First Pitch: Updated Trade Values

Published:

One of the more popular features on the site has been the “Trade Values” series. When a player is connected to the Pittsburgh Pirates through a rumor, we take a look at their trade values using a very formulated and unbiased approach. We plug in the player’s salary, WAR, and years of control in to a calculator, and the end result is a dollar figure telling how much the player would be worth on the trade market.

That dollar figure usually says what type of prospects a player could fetch. For example, previously a player with a $36.5 M figure could fetch a top ten hitting prospect. A player with a $15.9 M figure could fetch a top 50 pitching prospect.

Those prospect values have been based on Victor Wang’s research of prospect values. However, the research has previously been based off articles that were written in early 2009.

Since the trade season is coming up, and since the trade values are such a popular feature, we decided to update the prospect rankings. A few months ago, I talked with Kevin Creagh about going back to review the data for the prospect trade values, with the focus on updating the values to reflect the current values. With the help of Steve DiMiceli, Kevin has finished the research, and now has the updated values for top 100 pitching and hitting prospects.

The article will either be uploaded tomorrow afternoon, or early Tuesday morning, depending on some last minute edits and how long those take. After that, we’ll start looking at some of the trade values for players who have been linked to the Pirates thus far.
