Burnett, Cabrera Injury Updates

Published:

Newly acquired right-hander A.J. Burnett is en route to Pittsburgh tonight, where he will undergo medical exams on Thursday on his right eye.

During the bunting competition on Field 5 at Pirate City on Wednesday, Burnett bunted a foul ball that ricocheted off his face and hit his right eye socket. The ball was delivered by a pitching machine on the field.

Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle was not at the field when the accident occurred. After the incident occurred, trainers immediately rushed over to Burnett and he was aided for a few minutes before he walked off the field for further examinations by the medical staff.

Before leaving the batting cage, which was in the sweet 16 round, Burnett joked to his teammates, “this isn’t over yet.” Burnett was facing off against prospect Bryan Morris.

Burnett was acquired from the New York Yankees in February in exchange for two prospects.

— Right-hander Daniel Cabrera, who is a non-roster spring training invite, was scheduled to pitch in Friday’s inter-squad game but was scratched back due to right forearm tightness. He is listed as day-to-day.
