Minor League Schedule: 5/22/11

For a more in depth review of yesterday’s games please check out our minor league wrap-up which can be found here. The VSL Pirates are off today, the league doesn’t play on Sundays. They resume their schedule Monday morning. Due to two doubleheaders in the last three days the Altoona Curve are starting Aaron Thompson on two days rest today. He lasted just 2/3rds on an inning on Thursday. Lineups for today’s games will be posted as soon as they are made available.

Wilson looks for his fifth win today.

AAA: Indianapolis (19-25) VS Scranton/WB (21-19) 1:05pm
Probable starter: Justin Wilson (4-3 2.27)

Game notes: Matt Hague went 2-3 with a walk and 2 RBI’s during last night’s 5-3 win. Jason Jaramillo went 2-4 and drove in 2 runs. Evan Meek made his last rehab appearance pitching one scoreless inning, striking out two and throwing 8 of his 13 pitches for strikes. He pitched yesterday as well but threw just 5 pitches. He is scheduled to rejoin the Pirates Tuesday.

AA: Altoona (21-20) VS Akron (21-22) 2:00pm
Probable starter:  Aaron Thompson (2-4 4.19)

Game notes: In game one of yesterday’s doubleheader Aaron Pribanic threw a 7 inning shutout. He gave up 6 hits, all singles,no walks and struck out just one. Starling Marte went 2-4 with his 3rd home run. Jordy Mercer went 2-3 raising his average to .250. In game two Bryan Morris went 3+ IP giving up 1 run on 1 hit and 2 walks with 3 K’s. It was his first start since April 18th and he was on a 50 pitch limit. Eric Fryer hit his 4th home run and Quincy Latimore went 2-3 for the team’s only 3 hits of game two.

High-A: Bradenton (18-25) @ Lakeland (21-22) 1:00pm
Probable starter: Quinton Miller (2-4 7.97)

Game notes: Phillip Irwin pitched 6 strong innings last night giving up just one run on a solo homer, one of just 3 hits he allowed. He also struck out 6 and induced eight groundball outs. His ERA stands at 0.96 after 6 starts. Elevys Gonzalez and David Rubinstein each went 2-4 with an RBI. Aaron Baker went 1-2 with 2 walks and recorded his 35th RBI,tops in the entire organization.

Low-A: West Virginia (20-21) VS Lakewood (20-22) 2:05pm
Probable starter: Zac Fuesser (1-0 1.73)

Game notes: Zack Von Rosenberg gave up 5 earned runs in just four innings last night. He allowed 6 hits, 1 walk,hit two batters and he struck out three. Trent Stevenson gave up 5 runs in 3 innings. Andrew Maggi went 3-4 with a walk,double and an RBI. Justin Howard went 3-5 with a double and 3 RBI’s. He now has 25 RBI’s on the year.

VSL: VSL Pirates (3-2) @ VSL Phillies (2-3) 11:00am 5/23

Games notes: Starter Roberto Espinoza gave up 3 runs in 4.1 IP. He gave up 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out three. Carlos Esqueda went 2-4,with a walk,3 runs scored and he hit his first homer of the season. Jose Roman went 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI’s. Ulises Montilla went 2-2 with 3 walks reaching base all 5 plate appearances. Bealyn Chourio went 1-2 with 2 walks in his pro debut.

John Dreker
John started working at Pirates Prospects in 2009, but his connection to the Pittsburgh Pirates started exactly 100 years earlier when Dots Miller debuted for the 1909 World Series champions. John was born in Kearny, NJ, two blocks from the house where Dots Miller grew up. From that hometown hero connection came a love of Pirates history, as well as the sport of baseball. When he didn't make it as a lefty pitcher with an 80+ MPH fastball and a slider that needed work, John turned to covering the game, eventually focusing in on the prospects side, where his interest was pushed by the big league team being below .500 for so long. John has covered the minors in some form since the 2002 season, and leads the draft and international coverage on Pirates Prospects. He writes daily on Pittsburgh Baseball History, when he's not covering the entire system daily throughout the entire year on Pirates Prospects.
