Game 91: Maholm Tosses Complete Game Shutout

Published:

One day after breaking loose with 17 hits, the Pirates collaborated for 19 hits and backed the stellar pitching of Paul Maholm.

Maholm went the distance and allowed three hits and no walks. He faced just two over the minimum as one runner reached on an error and the Pirates turned a pair of double plays.

The Pirates faced Roy Oswalt just last week and he authored a complete game one hitter. This afternoon, he left the game two innings after Pedro Alvarez lined one off his ankle. Alvarez infield single happened in the second and touched off a nice rally that saw Ryan Doumit and Lastings Milledge each knock in a run. Oswalt left after four innings and the Houston bullpen was unable to hold the Pirates at bay.

Garrett Jones hit a two out, two run homer off of Chris Sampson in the fifth. In the sixth Andrew McCutchen delivered a two out, two run single off of rookie Wilton Lopez. Casey Daigle was victimized for three doubles among four hits in a three run 8th inning that sealed it.

Oswalt took the loss after giving up those two runs in four innings. Houston did not leave a runner stranded until the 8th inning.

The Good
Ronny Cedeno went 4-4 with three doubles. Jose Tabata and Doumit each had three hits.

The Bad
McCutchen left the game after making a diving catch in the 8th inning.

The Rest
Maholm is now 9-5 against the Astros. Oswalt fell to 15-8 against Pittsburgh.

This was Cedeno’s second career four hit game. It was the first time he had three doubles in one contest.

Jones hit 10 homers last July but hit just his second of the month in 2010.

Tabata had three hits for the second time in his career.

This was Maholm’s second career shutout (4/24/07 against Houston) and his first complete game since 4/27/08 against Philadelphia.
