Game 40: Balanced Attack Paces Bucco Win

Published:

Decent pitching and decent offense in the same game has been hard to come by. The Pirates scored six times with six different players knocking in a run. They got a solid effort from the pitching staff, too. The results: a win.

The Battlin’ Bucs were trailing 4-3 coming into the home half of the seventh. But they rallied for three runs off of Milwaukee starter Randy Wolf. Garrett Jones, Ryan Doumit and Steve Pearce all had RBI singles to give the Pirates a two run cushion.

That made a winner of reliever Javier Lopez. He got the final out of the seventh in relief of D.J. Carrasco, who was the first reliever of the game. Carrasco entered during a tie game and allowed the go ahead run. He left with the bases loaded and two out. Lopez whiffed Jody Gerut to get out of the jam. Octavio Dotel pitched the 9th for a save.

Wolf went 6-1/3 and gave up all six runs on 10 hits. Pirates starter Brian Burres allowed three runs in six innings. He struck out three and gave up seven hits.

The Good
Pearce was 3-4 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and an RBI.

Every Pirate starter got on base.

The Bad
Nothing much to speak of.

The Rest
This was Pearce’s first ever three hit game. It was the third time he hit two doubles in a game.

Milwaukee has dropped nine in a row.

Burres has a two game hitting streak.

Jones came into the game hitting .357 in May.

Wolf was 8-1 in 14 career starts against Pittsburgh prior to taking the loss tonight.
